He who rejects you…

Dear friends in Christ, for those who have suffered the pains of rejection, they know how important it is to be accepted and to feel loved. Some have been targeted for their faith and others because they will not join the bandwagon of evil doers. If you have to suffer rejection on any of these accounts, you have something to share with the Lord himself, who was rejected both at home and by the authorities.

The first reading of today (Job 38:1.12-21;40:3-5) tells us of God’s response to the discussions between Job and his friends. While Job and his friends found no satisfying answers to many of the questions they have raised concerning why a just man should suffer, God asks even more questions. God speaks from the whirlwind and the questions he asked, probes into how much is hidden from mankind. It reveals the Almighty strength of God,—the all-knowing in every situation. God asks, “Have you commanded the morning since your days began…Have you entered into the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep? Have the gates of death been revealed to you…have you comprehended the expanse of the earth? Declare if you know all these.” You might try to answer any of these questions, but of what use will your answer be? Only God knows! Job answered God, “Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you?” The advances in science and technology have revealed more and more the awesomeness of God in creation. The more we probe, the less we get to know. That is how wonderful God is, in his holy place.

The gospel passage (Luke 10:13-16) tells us of the disappointment of Jesus about some of the places where he had worked miracles—Chorazin and Bethsaida. Chorazin was mentioned only here in the Gospel. It shows clearly that the mission of Jesus was not successful everywhere. There were places where he suffered rejection. He foretold the same for his disciples, they will suffer rejection too but that is immaterial. They have the mandate to do their work without worrying about the result. Do you feel disappointed when others fail to listen to you and accept you? He says, “He who hears you, hears me, and he who rejects you, rejects me…”

Let us pray: Lord give us the courage to keep at our duty even when the result is discouraging. Bless all our efforts at spreading your word. Amen. May the Almighty God bless you, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen
